The Moshi FireWire 800 cable has a pleasant design that seems to compliment the modern look of Apple computers and Windows PCs. However, it’s pricey for a nearly 6-foot FireWire cable, and aside from some accessories, Moshi doesn’t have any other FireWire cables available. It lands in 10th place on our list.

The Moshi FireWire 800 cable (IEEE 1394b) provides a fast signal throughput of 800Mbps (Megabits per second) via its 9-pin connector that is found on both ends of the cable. Both connectors are male, since computers, external hard drives and burners, and other FireWire devices have female FireWire 800 ports. The construction of the cable is good, providing a durable and protected connectivity solution.

This FireWire cable also ships with a Moshi HandyStrap, which is a great way to keep this 6-foot cable wrapped up for travel or just to help de-clutter your desk. This is especially handy if you have several cables on your workspace because the HandyStrap and wrapped cables are easier to organize and identify.

This Moshi cable is sturdy and durable, and the company has triple shielded its cable’s wires to ensure they are protected physically. According to Moshi, its cables' triple shielding guards signal transmissions through the cable against EM and RF interference and electromagnetic and radio frequencies respectively. Basically, this keeps the signal going despite any of these potential types of interference.

We also recommend that you wrap the cable into loops, under and over, instead of wrapping it in a way that kinks or improperly bends the wires within the cable, which can disrupt the signal flow and slow the speed, or stop the signal throughput altogether.

This is the only FireWire cable Moshi carries, which is especially unfortunate since it is a well-made, durable FireWire 800 cable. However, the company does sell a solid FireWire 800 to 400 (6-pin) adaptor that keeps your computer connected to any FireWire 400 devices. Our only complaint is that it’s essentially two connectors with a small cable holding them together instead of a smaller male-female adaptor.

Moshi also sells two attractive hubs. The first, the iLynx Silver, is a little large, but it has four USB 2.0 ports and two FireWire 400 ports. The iLynx 800 Silver has a two FireWire 800 ports and four USB 2.0 ports. If you need to connect to a video camera via a FireWire 400 4-pin cable, you’ll need to buy a third-party FireWire 800 9-pin to FireWire 400 4-pin adaptor to do so.

Moshi provides a few support options for its FireWire 800 cable, including a Help page with FAQs and a limited lifetime warranty (that does not cover its audio products). You can contact Moshi directly by email; the company provides an address to reach both its tech-support and customer-service departments.

Summary:

Overall, the Moshi FireWire 800 cable is a solid and nicely designed solution for your computer connectivity needs. However, Moshi only sells one type of FireWire cable with a handful of accessories. The price for its cable is also higher than similar cables' prices, which is something to consider if you need more than one FireWire 800 cable.
